The completion of a promise thirty years in the making was celebrated recently! In 1982, Black Hills Works (then Black Hills Workshop) supported around 150 people, and finding adequate housing was already an issue. Black Hill Works owned the land at 1212 East St. Cloud Street, but did not have the funds to build on it. That’s when Gateway Partnership stepped in. “I had been a friend of the Workshop for many years.” says Glenn Barber who along with Charles Keown and Bill Baumgartner, both deceased, purchased the land for $22,000, then worked to secure the funding for building an apartment on it. Their friend Ep Howe who was serving on the Black Hills Work’s board was also very involved in what was the first project of its kind; securing HUD (the US Department of Housing and Urban Development) funding for a project built by a private company. Glenn says it took support of then Senator George McGovern to accomplish the job.

Successful author Sandra Brannan graciously agreed to allow us to creatively insert a character name into her upcoming novel "Noah's Rainy Day" and we can't wait to crack the cover when it is published in September. Through our Black Hills Works Foundation Facebook fan site we encouraged a donation of $25 or more to submit a name that if selected could be used in the novel and the response was amazing! Over $1100 was raised to support our building fund.

The Wilfred & Margaret Rasmussen Memorial Trust recently gave another sizeable bequest to Black Hills Works. We have received this annual gift since 1995 and since that time they have blessed the agency with over $250,000.00. These funds have made a significant impact on literally hundreds of the people served by our agency! With some of these funds "Shorty's Arcade" has been established to not only provide fun but also assist with balance and eye hand coordination for the many adults who frequent the arcade within the newly established Learning Institute at 3603 Range Road, Rapid City, SD. This was exactly what this couple would have LOVED!

Over 40 enjoyed a day with professional dancers from the Repertory Dance Theatre of Utah in February. Despite snow, this troupe of amazing dancers were able to spend the entire morning conducting a movement works with a dozen individuals served by Black Hills Works in the Black Hills Works Gymnasium. During that time they developed an amazing "mini-performance" for a large audience that afternoon and added in several more people from the audience as the performance unfolded. All the disabled and non disabled people who participated enjoyed the experience and admired the professionalism shared by each dancer. There was a reception directly following the performance in the Suzie Cappa Art Center for all.

Rapid City Regional Hospital (aka Regional Health) staff selected to support Black Hills Works Foundation (BHWF) with a wonderful donation recently. Presenting the check, in the photo left to right, is Regional Health Chief Operating Officer, Timothy Sughrue M.P.H., F.A.C.H.E. , Stacy Young Bird, a person served, and BHWF Development Director JoAnne Schriver. Mr. Sughrue stated "Our staff commend your agency for the wonderful job you do and are pleased to present you with these funds from wearing jeans." We are so pleased to have an excellent relationship with Regional Health. We certainly could not provide the high level of care we are known for without their support and access to outstanding medical care and facilities. We thank each and every person who contributed and all those who daily support the people we serve!
